Hello everyone, new guy here.
Nice to meet you all. I want to first thank everyone for the efforts to bring this game out to the rest of us, what a blast from the past! I SO remember playing this and loving the map. But, let's get to the point of this thread, shall we?
Survival: As written, it allows a single character to have the potential to survive in a single environment and live off the land for a day with scant supplies. Sounds great! I do have two issues with it, however.
First, only 4 terrain types? Here, I propose this be raised to 7, keeping to terrains that a typical Swords-and-Sorcery adventurer would in fact adventure in.
Second, as per the footnote in the PDF/RTF doc for ZeFRS, this talent does not speak about being able to forage for any more than one character at a time. I am thinking here, not only in an 'adventuring party' scenario, but also a nation whose armies are in the field, on some campaign of mighty conquest, and of course utilizing those soldiers who are skilled at such to forage and thus increase they're in-field time and lesson attrition to supply stores. As written, each individual soldier would need to be foraging daily in order for each one to be provided for outside of what has been brought along in the supply train. Here I propose a method wherein a single soldier in a squad or a single adventurer in the party, with the requisite talent, may be able to provide for more than his or her own self on a daily foraging basis. So, without further ado, allow me to present:
Survival
Talent Pool: Knowledge
This talent lets your character live off the land in one of seven types of terrain: desert, jungle, arctic, mountain, forest, hills, and plains. Survival in each type of terrain must be taken separately. Once a day, a successful resolution check against this Talent provides one day's food and water (even in the desert) plus shelter from the elements. A Yellow success results in two day's food and water and shelter for two, meaning the character in question may provide for two people that day, or have some to spare for leaner times. Orange successes provide 4 day's worth and equal shelter, and Red successes provide a week's worth of food and shelter for up to 7 people respectively.
Just wondering if anyone else here thinks this is worthwhile as an addition to the basic rules, or worth house-ruling... Or perhaps you'd like to alter/change it? Interested in what you all have to say about this.
I'll be visiting this game bit by bit over the next few days and seeing what I would like to update a bit for personal use... But I definitely intend to keep it as simple and fast-paced as possible, meaning I'm not interested in mucking up the rules with extra dice rolls etc. Should be fun!
