Sorry to kick up dirt on an old topic but I wanted to put my 2 lunas in on the subject.
It is my opinion that the two-weapon talent in the original Conan game, then known as the Zingaran fighting, was treated separately from the regular weapon fighting. They are, in essence, two different styles. You could have a 5 in sword and 1 in dagger but have 13 in two-weapon fighting. When fighting with two-weapons you use the two-weapon fighting skill and if using singly, you use the individual weapon talent. Sometimes your two-weapon skill is less than the skill ratings for the individual weapons.
This is not obvious from the original Conan rules but in the modules it becomes clear. The pregenerated character list in CN1 Conan the Buccaneer bears this out. Antony the Argossean has a Saber-10, Dirk- 5 and Zing FHT-5. So, his two-weapon skill is less than his single saber skill. He's better one-handed. No real issue. The crew are a different matter. Their sabre ratings are 5 and dirk ratings 2 while their Zing FHT is 10! They are better two-handed than they are one-handed.
At first this seems strange but maybe not unreasonable. The only rationale that I can come up with is that the style they know is based on the fact that you have two-weapons and there attack and defense moves require/expect both weapons to be there. The crews' fighting skill with one weapon, which has a different attack and defense dynamic, is not as good.
I look forward to your comments. This talent is the only one I've really had trouble grasping. While I like Zefrs treatment of the subject, the original game seems to have had a different concept, at least as expressed in the module. The talent is worthwhile for a couple of points because it also gets rid of the -3 penalty.
FWIW,
Aidan
